Supplements

It’s super important to exercise and eat well however another important component to getting healthy is getting all of your nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.

Over 60% of women with PCOS have a Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is an incredible vitamin and it’s actually more of a hormone than a vitamin - a hormone that is synthesized by sunlight and produced by the kidneys. Vitamin D is also VERY important for immune function, hormone stabilization, and even maintaining a healthy weight.

I used to be INCREDIBLY deficient. Normal Vit. D levels are between 30-50 mL. At one point my levels got down to 12. I started taking vitamins. D supplements and for the last few years have taken 10,000 IU’s a day and I’m happy to say I have normal optimal Vitamin. D levels.

PCOS is a complex metabolic illness with many layers. While Vitamin D is important, so are other nutrients.

It’s important to get nutrients from food, but a lot of times, a good chunk of nutrients are cooked off as you cook and bioavailability (think of bioavailability as net nutrients - the nutrients that you actually absorb from food once processed through the liver).

The quality of supplements also matters due to bioavailability and what’s actually in the supplement.

Here’s a list (Noelle approved) of supplements I take every day and why I use them.

Pure Encapsulations Vitamin D3 10,000 IU

Supports musculoskeletal cardiovascular, neurocognitive, cellular, hormone and immune health. I use this for my PCOS and it helps with a lot of things such as weight control, helps better stabilize my hormones, energy, better immunity, heart health, memory etc. The benefit of having optimal vitamin D levels is incredible.

Pure Encapsulations Methylcobalamin (Vitamin B12) 1,000 mcg

Supports energy production, neurological health and emotional wellness.

If you have PCOS or thyroid trouble or just barely have any energy even after a full night’s sleep, you may be running low on Vitamin B12! It is super important ( I would say just as Vitamin D) and is a game-changer.

Pure Encapsulations UltraMag Magneisum 225mg

This helps with maintaining healthy bones while promoting muscle relaxation and cardiovascular health, fosters numerous physiological functions, including nutrient metabolism and energy production.

Pure Encapsulations PureHeart K2D

Supports cardiovascular function by balancing calcium in the arteries and veins for optimal cardiovascular function. You may wonder why I take this, and the reality is, women with PCOS (no matter if you have all the symptoms or if you just have one) have an increased risk for a cardiac event, especially as we age. You may not feel like you’ll have heart problems tomorrow, but to ensure that your risk is low, it’s best to be a step or two ahead of it. Taking this supplement is my way of staying on top of it and it can help you too. (You don’t need to have PCOS to take this. If you just want to be proactive about your heart health, this is a good way to start.)

Pure Encapsulations NAC (N-acetylcysteine) 600 mg

This is one of my fav supplements for many reasons. This is a great supplement for balancing hormones, and metabolic health. This is great for PCOS; I’ve been taking it for eight years. The sad fact about this supplement, however, is that the FDA has just banned the use of NAC in supplements (coincidentally, shortly after a study was done studying the use of NAC for the treatment/prevention of COVID.) While it’s great news that it does help with COVID, it’s no longer going to be sold as an accessible supplement.

The way NAC helps with COVID is that when we take NAC, it gets absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, sent to the liver, and converted to cysteine. The liver uses cysteine to produce glutathione, which then enters the bloodstream and gets distributed throughout the body. Glutathione plays a key role in the proper function of the T-cell lymphocytes. Pure Encapsulations are currently the only reputable supplement company that still has any left so I highly recommend buying as much as you can because once they run out, there won’t be anymore. Get NAC while you can, but also do more research on it to make sure it’s right for you.

COq10

COq10 is Co-enzyme Q10. It’s a nutrient that occurs naturally in the body. CoQ10 is also in many foods we eat. CoQ10 acts as an antioxidant, which protects cells from damage and plays an important part in the metabolism. It also helps with heart health also!

TrueHope Empower

Mood swings are a very common problem when your hormones are out of control and if you’re really lucky, you may have PMDD (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder) a much more severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). I have had my fair share of mood swings that haven’t been pretty( during my period) but I can tell you, if you’ve been through it, you aren’t alone. Something that has helped my mood swings have been these supplements. It’s a blend of 36 vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that help balance things out.

If you have any questions about this, please don’t hesitate. This is a wonderful supplement and the people behind it are wonderful. My boyfriend saw a change in my mood within 3 weeks and he can absolutely tell if I have missed a day or two.

If you have any questions about any of the supplements I take, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Stay Healthy!
