Hair Loss -> Hair Growth
Our hair symbolizes so much. It symbolizes fertility and beauty. For some it’s confidence, for others, it’s a symbol of connection to different family members who have the same hair color and texture. Most can agree that our hair is important to us as it holds different meanings for each and every one of us. But what happens when you start to experience hair loss? Why Does it happen to begin with?
Hair loss happens for many reasons. One of which could be stress. Others, hormonal issues. PCOS increases a female’s testosterone which then created DHT; Dihydrotestosterone. This is an endogenous androgen sex steroid and hormone. When DHT is produced, it blocks the follicles in our scalp. Our hair falls out, but because our follicles are then blocked with DHT, there is no room for hair to grow back therefore the hair that we lost, is no longer growing which then results in bald spots, thinner-looking hair, and so on. When we level out our hormones and take control, DHT levels depress therefore less blocking of the hair follicle. It’s important that we also take into consideration what products we are using in our hair because chemicals can be endocrine disruptors meaning; a chemical that creates a disruption within our hormones thus creating a cycle that never ends.
I was first 17 or 18 when I noticed how thin my hair was getting. I knew I had PCOS and I knew this was a symptom, but I didn’t know how to stop it. By the time I was 20 I had purchased hair extensions. Clip-in hair extensions that made my hair super full and it made me feel pretty. It was a confidence boost but at the same time, I hated that I felt the need to resort to hair extensions. They were both a symbol of beauty, but a symbol of how horrible my real hair had gotten. When I eventually got on my health journey to treat PCOS holistically, I cut my hair up to my shoulders, which at the time was the shortest I’ve ever cut it. It felt like a rebirth. I made a commitment to only straighten my hair on weekends to decrease heat exposure, I found a brand of shampoo at the time that was not as chemically clean as what I use today, but it was a start. I washed my hair every other day after the gym and let it dry naturally.
As I started to normalize my hormones through my lifestyle change of food and exercise, my hair was growing like crazy! It was one of the best feelings I’d had in a long time. I couldn’t believe it. As time went on, about 2017/2018 I had this sense of urgency to clean up the products I was using - Makeup, Pads, hair products, you name it. After tons of research, I found this amazing brand of Hair product called La Tierra Sagrada. Meaning Sacred Earth, in Spanish. Conceptualized during an Ayahuasca ceremony, the founder who is a hairstylist wanted to create a product that was healthy for the hair and kept it healthy. I knew the product was legit when I realized the founder traveled to South America for an Ayahuasca retreat- I was sold on that alone! The product has been absolutely wonderful to my hair, keeping it healthy. It has a very earthy scent that feels very grounding used with mainly essential oils. To me using it is ceremonial, sacred, and healing. Every strand of my hair is stronger because of this brand.
You’re probably wondering why I don’t use the conditioner - the reason being is because there is a good amount of Rosemary essential oil in it and my boyfriend is in fact allergic to Rosemary so I try to make sure the products I use are either Rosemary free or have Rosemary as the very last item of the ingredients list (such as the hair oil from the line)- ingredients list goes in order as to what the product is made the most of to the least. So with that being said, I use ACURE hair conditional that is Almond and Pumpkin and also smells wonderful - actually the two products together smell divine and work well with each other.
